While the playable prototype was just an April Fool’s joke, this document outlines some ideas for a full game version of GyaruIchi. Feel free to check out the April Fools teaser here!

Overview

ギャル一 (GyaruIchi) — Ninja Gals is a 2D action platformer featuring the Daily Gyaru crew. Biology student by day, super buff and super cute Kunoichi at night. Our heroine Kassiopeia Kanayama CassyCassy: “Cassy for… everyone!”💖 protects her home town – the extremely central English city of Ellenbridge – from gangs, evil ninja clans, and even demons.

But her friends don’t leave her hanging. Amy supplies Cassy with new gear, Melanie teaches Onmyō magic, and Rhia… is lost most of the time… but if you find her, she’s sharing her special jutsus with you!

General Gameplay

The game features a variety of linear 2D stages spanning multiple chapters, where Cassy beats up baddies with her trusty Ninja sword. Each chapter ends with a boss fight.

Stage selection is done via a static world/town map. Select icon on map -> Play Stage/Event. Stages can be replayed at any time!

The combat mechanics are inspired by Ninja Gaiden (the 2004 version on Xbox) and aim to port some of its mechanics into a 2D game. Therefore the mechanics are somewhat complex:

  • A quick and heavy attack
  • dedicated Combo Strings (XXX, XXX, XYXXXY etc.)
  • Izuna Drops!!!
  • blocking, dodging
  • Ninpo/Onymo
  • low impact projectile weapon

Enemies may have a decent amount of health, so all those fancy combo strings have some utility!

Certain collectibles are spread around stages and can be traded for new abilities. E.g. valuable items, finding Rhia, sealed magic scrolls etc.

Other collectibles directly serve character progression:

  • Additional Health
  • longer magic/Ninpo bar

“Resource Management” is simple: A health bar and Magic Points, where different magic consumes a different amount of points. Projectiles are unlimited and do no damage, but can be used to stagger enemies, extend combos, etc.

The weapon can be upgraded, which expands its moveset.

Ninpo are the offensive spells and are rare and powerful (e.g. 2-3 different ones). Onmyō provides buffs like higher defence/attack etc. and binds magic points (basically a non-free replacement for accessories).

Some abilities will be tied to main story progression and required to beat the game. e.g. double jump, wall run etc. Others will be optional and are just useful, e.g. multi-air dash, better Izuna Drop, Flying Swallow type move.

Some abilities may have upgrades too.

Other Character Integration

Amy serves as the general merchant and sells weapon upgrades, new ninja and completion tools (e.g. secret detector)

Melanie is the magic teacher. Bring her secret scrolls in exchange for new magic, or upgrades to existing Ninpo/Onmyō.

Rhia is the “cute collectible” in stages and finding her also teaches non-essential skills.

Azdael may serve as a red herring antagonist, Sandra may appear in dialogue scenes.

Siggy might need rescuing at some point 😉

Slice-of-Life Elements & Relationship Building

Since the Daily Gyaru is primarily a slice-of-life series, this will be reflected in the game as well.

After certain stages and other unlock conditions, events with other characters may become available, focusing on daily life content, like the main series.

Events will raise relationship status and unlock further scenes, including spicier content. Higher relationship status may affect the ending, however because this is TDG the endings will only range from wholesome to extra wholesome and wholesome spicy.

Potential Further Iterations / Nice to Have

  • multiple weapons with unique movesets
  • counter attacks
  • multiple projectiles
    • Heavy Kunai: slower startup, longer stagger
    • pinwheel Shuriken: can hit multiple targets and returns to user, slowest rate
  • outfits/other char skins
    • casual outfit, workout etc.
    • play with Mel, Amy etc. as skins

Viability

Unfortunately really low. 😅

I do not have the ability, nor skills to make something like this to my and anyone else’s satisfaction.
